As women we hold many stories in our wombs. This group led by Mavis Gewant will use mandala, storytelling, meditation and the creative process as a way to heal our stories and create new ones.
Many women suffer trauma as the result of a difficult birth. Perhaps you were mistreated by the staff, felt a lack of support or had an unexpected outcome. In a safe and nurturing environment women will get in touch with their birth trauma and begin the healing journey. The creative process is a valuable tool for transformation, the use of sacred art, writing, guided imagery and telling our stories, will help us heal and move forward.

Just read this article and think its valuable to reprint. Apparently kegels do more damage than good to the pelvic floor integrity. Squatting provides the most benefit for women, as it helps strengthen the muscles and prevent incontinence!
There are many valuable tools to aid relaxation during labor. Creating a calm environment can help a woman to feel safe and relaxed, especially when transitioning from home to hospital. Listening to music can really help her to focus and a recent study shows that music reduces the sensation of pain and decreases her emotional distress during labor.
Taking a good birth preperation class outside of the hospital setting is very valuable for women to know they have options. Many of our members give classes that can be extremely helpful. Hypnobirthing and Hypnobabies, claim to help women experience birth without fear and pain. They reframe negative birth words, such as contractions to surges and provide women with tools to go within.
Taking a class focusing on "comfort measures" gives couples tools for natural pain management, great for those committed to avoiding pain medication. This class is also great for early labor, which is done at home, even if one is planning to get meds later on.
These tools will help mom to cope as she progresses to active labor.
Have you heard about the benefits of placenta encapsulation? Studies show that placenta is extremely nutrient rich, high in iron, protein, vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B6 and of course, your own natural hormones, making it perfectly made for you, by you. Experts agree that the placenta retains hormones, and thus reintroducing them to your system may ease hormonal fluctuations. An Independent Placenta Services Specialist is now available in our area! Courtney Durfee, of CD Doula Services, will personally prepare your capsules after your birth so that you can enjoy your postpartum, recover quicker and avoid the baby blues.
Traditionally placenta capsules are used to:
* Balance your hormones
* Enhance your milk supply
* Increase your energy
* Combat fatigue
Placenta capsules may help:
* Quicker postpartum recovery
* Bring the body back into balance
* Prevent the “baby blues”
* Shorten postpartum bleeding time
* Return your uterus to pre-pregnancy size quicker (Increases rate of uterine involution)
* Increase postpartum iron levels
Just want to thank all of you for stopping by. We launched this site to provide visibility for doulas in our area, the Hudson Valley. We come from many different backgrounds, some of us have lots of experience and some are just starting out. We all have so much to offer and also learn from each other. One thing that bonds us, is our desire to support women to have the birth they desire and to help women and their partners to transition in to their new role as parents. It's a very exciting time, actually one of the most transformative moments in one's life. We are all honored to be part of that!
This website is a work in progress... we will be adding more things as we go along!
